FROM FEUD TO CASTLE, A LONG DISTANT RESIDENCE
Built in the sixteenth century by the tenth Count of Altomonte, Pietro Antonio Sanseverino, the Castle of Serragiumenta bears witness to an ancient and distant history over the centuries, with the Sangineto family that reigned from the early 1300s up to 1381, the year in which the Sanseverino family started to reign.
Serra della Giumenta was indeed one of the 12 sub feuds instituted by Count Filippo di Sangineto due to military and economic reasons. Equipped with an appreciable extension of territory, it was an excellent place for breeding horses of good race.
In the XIX century as reported in a map of the time, it dates back the construction of the church with a baroque altar, the barn – now the Aviary – and other small annexed buildings.
In 1947 it was purchased, together with the surrounding farmland, by Federico Bilotti who took care of a first recovery of the structure, used as a family home, and of the revival of agricultural production in the surrounding land.
The structure of the Castle, perfectly restored, has remained unchanged until today. The interiors, lounge after salon, reveal the atmosphere and the sober taste of the country homes of that time
